There is nothing funny about having a stroke, but don’t tell Eric Barr that. Striking Back makes use of dark humor to illuminate a “post-stroke” existence. In “An ICU Room must be a miserable place to die” the speaker notices “...a bad still life of flowers in a vase / To be viewed by the stilled life in the bed / Three boxes of rubber gloves / So everyone, no matter their size / Can get their hands on you.” Barr is a truthteller. In “Who Will Die First?” he writes, “It’s not that I think about death a lot. / Like most people I don’t notice that / I’m alive // Until there is something to complain about.” At times, Barr’s approach may seem painfully direct. The effect? Striking Back is a stroke of genius.
