About the Author: TENSHO DAVID SCHNEIDER began Buddhist practice in 1970 at the San Francisco Zen Center and was ordained in 1977. There, he studied under Shunryu Suzuki-roshi and Richard Baker-roshi. Later, in San Francisco and then in Europe, he continued study under Chögyam Trungpa Rinpoche and Sakyong Mipham Rinpoche. He was appointed acharya (senior teacher) in 1995. He is the co-editor, with Kazuaki Tanahashi, of Essential Zen (HarperSF) and author of Crowded by Beauty: the Life & Zen of Poet Philip Whalen (University of California Press).
