Paperback. Magic is never a free pass.Step into a hidden supernatural ecosystem operating just beneath the surface of our daily routines. In this captivating volume, fifteen urban fantasy storytellers pit their characters against real-world issues in settings that are simultaneously arcane and all-too real. Play along with a gambler who discovers the terrifying cost of his lucky streak, listen in as a musician learns a hard lesson at the hands of a trickster, and ride shotgun with a detective using his unique gifts to uncover the truth behind a murder. From a siren prowling the sun-drenched casinos of Las Vegas to a high-stakes confrontation in the historic towers of Edinburgh, these narratives deftly illustrate the price of magic. It is volatile, highly taxed, and guaranteed to complicate an already messy life, while the victories resonate at an intensely personal level because their vulnerabilities are so beautifully exposed.Contains stories by Taylen Carver, Douglas Smith, Leigh Saunders, L.D.B. Taylor, Jena Rey, Meyari McFarland, C.J. Erick, Mike Jack Stoumbos, L.J. Hilse, Bryan Fox, Jr., Jacob Seinemeier, Grayson Wilson, Edward J. Knight, Lysandra James, and Kay Hanifen.
