From the Author
Kids massacre kids in Colorado, Arkansas, or East L.A. Sleazy tell-all, show-all talk shows screech across TV and radio airwaves. A President "mispeaks" and tarnishes the Presidency. Our public schools, sad to say, churn out semi-literate consumers with low expectations but high self-esteem.
In light of such social chaos, why do so many people still believe that they should be able to do their own thing, as long as they don't hurt anyone? Why today is the only evil "intolerance"--that is, questioning the values of others? How can many honestly believe that morals are relative? The answer is simple but hard to see: tainted, deeply entrenched ideas--namely, mental viruses.
In Streams of Confusion I take the reader on a journey through modern thought--and also into the nooks and crannies of the modern mind. A relatively small group of great thinkers, I contend, released ideas in their times that since then have trickled down to the rest of us, reaching in this Information Age a kind of critical mass. I quote these figures and dissect their ideas as I examine 13 "mega-ideas" that now rule the day, with little challenge or opposition. Then, after isolating each great idea, one by one, I reveal the evident causal relationships between each belief and the turbulent times we live in.
In sum, I take readers back to the headwaters that, little by little, since about A.D. 1660 have gained such momentum and prominence that we now find ourselves awash in ideas that most take for granted as true. The insights I offer, I hope, will set people free as I chip away at these "mind-forged manacles." If you have been bewildered by the "postmodern" confusion of our day, I try to provide some possible answers.
Whether you agree with me by the end of the book or not, I'm certain that you will never be able to look at human "progress" and "value systems" in quite the same way as you probably have since cracking open your first basal reader, your canvas-shod feet barely able to reach the floor beneath your desk.
