IN the following pages I have endeavoured to tell, as simply and briefly as possible, the story of Wagner's great music-dramas, so that anyone knowing nothing of them may learn easily, first of all, what they are all about.
Next, I have given the principal musical motives, so that, having grasped what the plot is, anyone who Wishes to persevere in the study of these works may learn something of the music and what it is intended to convey. It is rather difficult to express exactly in English some of the meanings of the original - e.g. I have found it impossible to translate adequately the word Webe, and have therefore retained it: woe, disaster, servitude, are all implied, but none of them is sufficient; as far as possible I have endeavoured to use English words.
