Item description from seller

xxviii, 480, 8 col & 8 b/w plates, 142 illus. . HB. Vg in well preserved d/w. Short tear to top of spine. Reprint (first published 1922). A celebrated popular history by Hendrik Willem van Loon (1882-1944), the Dutch-American historian, journalist, author and illustrator. First published in 1921, the book presents the history of civilisation in an engaging and deliberately accessible form, beginning with prehistoric man and tracing the development of human society, religion, exploration, science, politics and culture into the modern age. Van Loon originally conceived the work for younger readers and illustrated it himself throughout with his characteristically lively drawings, diagrams and maps. His informal narrative style and imaginative illustrations helped make history approachable to a wide general readership, and established his reputation as one of the most successful popularisers of history of his generation.
