About this Item

Hard Cover. Good/No Jacket. Ex-Library. Red cloth with black stamping. Spine is a bit loose but not starting. Spine ends bumped, heel of spine has two tiny tears to cloth; cloth also rubbed away at corners. Some soiling to edges. Remnants of a library envelope pasted to flyleaf, but no other signs of library use. Some pages show signs of wear, but text is clean and solid. Darrow (1857-1938) was one of the most famous lawyers in the country, an eloquent opponent of the death penalty. He was nearly 70 when he tried his two most spectacular cases: defending teenage murderers Leopold and Loeb against a possible death sentence in a 1924 hearing, and taking on William Jennings Bryan in the Scopes "Monkey Trial" in 1925. One of his most interesting stories is about the Sweet case, in which Darrow defended members of a black family accused of murder when a member of a white mob attacking them was killed. "I may not be true to my ideals always, but I never see a negro [sic] without feeling that I ought to pay part of a debt to a race captured and brought here in chains," writes Darrow. He discusses his major cases in this book, as well as telling his life story. This is a later (1934) printing of a book originally published in 1932. Illustrated with photos.
