Item description from seller

Rock Island, Illinois: Augustana Book Concern, 1935. Very Good condition. Previous owner's name [Marguerite A. Johnson] and "Birthday 1940, From Uncle Leonard and Aunt Esther" on the front free endpaper and ink stamp of a Lutheran church in Mesa Arizona on the top edge of the text block. Your cataloguer researched the name "Marguerite A. Johnson." Turns out that is the name given upon birth to American poet, historian, educator, actress, composer, playwright, and children's author Maya Angelou. But we have not been able to connect this book to Maya Angelou. If it was hers, she would have been 12 years old in 1940. Anyone know if Maya Angelou had an Uncle Leonard and Aunt Esther? A few pages with red pencil underlining. Small tape marks on the endpapers. A study of the historical background of Christian hymns and spirituals movements within the Church. Bound in the original gilt-stamped red cloth. Gilt stamping is still bright and shiny. Third Edition. Hardcover. Very Good condition/No dust jacket. 8vo. 504pp. Great Packaging, Fast Shipping.

Store description

About Books [Genny and Michael Winne, proprietors, formerly of Parsippany, New Jersey) has been selling rare and out of print books since 1985. Besides book fairs and mail order catalogue, long-time collectors and dealers will remember our lengthy For Sale ads in the Antiquarian Bookman and similar magazines. Our inventory of more than 40,000 volumes is especially strong in the specialities listed, but contains fine books in a variety of other fields as well. Because most of our books are stored in protective boxes, rather than on shelves, they cannot be viewed as a whole. If you want to examine specific titles, please provide 24 hours notice and we will make them available for your inspection. Phone calls to (702) 750-2722 are welcome, but please only between the hours of 8am and 10pm, west coast time. Our phone is a landline that cannot receive texts.
