First edition. New York: Frederick A. Stokes Company, 1919; copyright 1918. Hardcover in the publisher’s original dark blue cloth, decoratively stamped in gilt and color with the flags and emblems of the Allied nations. 371 pages, illustrated with full-page color plates. An account of the First World War by William Stanley Braithwaite, the noted African American poet, literary critic, anthologist, and recipient of the 1918 Spingarn Medal. Fair condition. Boards show pronounced mottled staining, rubbing, and general shelf wear. Substantial loss to the gilt title lettering on the front board. Corners and spine ends are worn and frayed. Page edges and contents are age-toned, with occasional spotting. Binding remains intact, and the color illustrations remain bright and attractive. No dust jacket. Unrestored. Please refer to the photographs for condition.
