That’s not a willpower failure. It’s a design that works exactly as intended — and it’s interruptible, starting today.
Stop Checking Your Phone is a toolkit of 30 specific, practical screen-time shortcuts, built for the exact moments the habit actually takes over: the automatic reach for it, the phantom buzz that wasn’t real, mealtimes, bedtime, meetings, and the in-between moments where boredom used to live.
Each shortcut takes minutes to learn and seconds to use. You’ll learn how to:
•Map your specific phone-check triggers, so you can interrupt the pattern instead of fighting willpower blind
•Add just enough friction to break the automatic reach, without locking the phone away entirely
•Redesign your notifications and home screen so the phone stops volunteering your attention
•Reclaim mealtimes, bedtime, and waiting-in-line moments without white-knuckling it
•Build a screen-time routine that survives past the first week, including how to recover cleanly from a slip-up
This isn’t a digital-minimalism manifesto, and it won’t ask you to delete social media or trade your smartphone for a flip phone — no honest book about modern life would, and this one doesn’t try. What it will do is hand you thirty specific, usable tools, each with a real-world example, a try-it-now exercise, the one mistake that quietly undoes it, and a one-line version you can actually remember. A short “Note on the Evidence” is upfront about which mechanisms are well-established behavioral science and which are reasonable, practical extrapolations.
You don’t need to read this cover to cover. Jump straight to the section that solves today’s problem, or use the built-in “Which Shortcut Right Now?” quick-start guide to find the right tool in seconds. The book closes with a 7-Day Reset Plan and a printable screen-time log, so you leave with a system, not just a list.
If you’ve ever said “I don’t even remember opening this app” — you’re not undisciplined. You’re responding exactly the way the app was built for you to respond. Start with shortcut #1.
