Stephen Girard, the richest man in America in his time, founded Girard College in 1831, just before his death. He left the bulk of his estate to establish the school in his name for "poor, white, male orphans." Opened in 1848, Girard College has flourished for more than 150 years, providing free education, clothing and boarding to more than 25,000 underprivileged children from all across the United States. The curriculum is a busy and exacting one affording opportunity to every race and color, now including female eligibles.
"The Stone Cocoon" is great reading for every family that looks for the standards of tradition, discipline and commitment, while promoting love and consideration for others in an ideal, quiet and beautiful campus environment that blossoms with peace and security. The story told here is warm and compelling, revealing one young man's "trauma, trial, and triumph" in his eight years of life within the walls of Girard College. Feel the agony of Richard Damiano as he is separated from family, experience his initial fear as he copes with the demands of his new home, laugh with him as he assimilates and involves himself with private school chicanery. And finally, feel his pride and triumph upon graduation and his tearful farewell to the school he learned to love, as he returns to his family and society, confident and eager to meet his new world.
"The Stone Cocoon," a description of the Girard experience, flows with charm and grace while holding firmly to the essence of what was expected of every Girard student: discipline, commitment, and integrity.
