The Swiss architect Rudolf Guyer has produced around 4,500 drawings since the 1950s, with pen, felt-tip pen, pencils of different hardnesses, coloured pencils, ink or watercolour paints. They show city views, landscapes with settlement, houses, ensembles of buildings, figures. There are quick sketches that resemble photographic snapshots and detailed drawings, black and white stands alongside colourful variety.
The Guyer, born in 1929, made it on professional trips and private holidays; in cities where he lived; and in the numerous countries he visited. The trained eye of the architect is quickly recognizable: to be seen are not impressions, but precisely captured, analyzed and lovingly interpreted observations. From Roman antiquity to the Pompidou Centre in Paris, from 1949 to the 21st century.
This large-format book presents 220 of these sheets for the first time. They show how Rudolf Guyer literally captured the world with the pen. His representations are a school of seeing in which the unabated valid actuality of drawing as a medium becomes experienced. The volume is complemented by an essay by architectural historian Martin Tschanz.
