Neuware - Ten-year-old Stephen is a bully, just ask his brother, Henry. Stephen often fights with Henry when he doesn't get his way. Scrappy is a street dog who never had a home. While out for a bike ride, Stephen comes across three dogs fighting over a bone. He watches as the smallest dog tries to defend himself against the two large, vicious dogs. Stephen scares off the large dogs and rescues the small dog. He names him Scrappy, because he is a fierce fighter, takes him home, cleans him up, and tends to his wounds.More than anything, Stephen wants to keep Scrappy as a pet. His dad does not want the extra cost and responsibility of dog ownership. His mom is tired of the boys fighting.Stephen comes up with a plan to prove to his parents that he and Henry can take care of Scrappy. To make his plan work, Stephen must learn to cooperate with his younger brother and manage his anger, which he does. Stephen rescues Scrappy from the hard life of a street dog. Stephen is energetic, strong, and confident, but he has a hard time controlling his temper. Arguments at home and frustrating situations can quickly turn into anger, and Stephen is still learning how to handle those feelings.
Then an unexpected encounter with a street dog gives him something very different to focus on.
As Stephen begins caring about someone other than himself, he starts seeing his family, his choices, and even his own emotions in a new way. Along the way, he also learns a simple technique that can help him calm down when anger starts to take over.
A touching story about friendship, responsibility, emotional growth, and the powerful effect animals can have on children.
Perfect for: children ages 7–11 who love rescue dogs and adventure stories, especially readers learning about anger, self-control, responsibility, empathy, sibling relationships, and managing strong emotions. Also suitable as a read-aloud for ages 5–8.
