Title: Scarlet and Black (also known as The Red and the Black) Author: Stendhal (Marie-Henri Beyle) Translator: C. K. Scott Moncrieff Publisher: J. M. Dent & Sons Ltd., London Publication Date: 1952 Series: Everyman's Library, No. 946 – Fiction Binding: Hardcover Volumes: Two volumes, complete Language: English Description A complete two-volume edition of Stendhal's celebrated novel Scarlet and Black, translated from the French by C. K. Scott Moncrieff and published by J. M. Dent & Sons Ltd. as No. 946 in the Everyman's Library series. First published in French in 1830 as Le Rouge et le Noir, the novel is widely regarded as one of the great works of nineteenth-century European literature. Set against the social and political tensions of Restoration France, it follows the ambitions, romantic entanglements and eventual downfall of Julien Sorel, a young man determined to rise above his humble origins. This attractive two-volume edition retains its distinctive red Everyman's Library dust jackets, featuring the decorative black-and-cream design characteristic of the series. An appealing set for collectors of Everyman's Library, classic French literature and twentieth-century literary translations. Condition Good (both volumes) The two volumes retain their original red printed dust jackets, which show visible signs of age and handling, including rubbing, edge wear, small tears and some loss of material. One dust jacket has a particularly noticeable torn section at the upper spine, with a partially detached flap of paper. Both jackets show wear at the spine extremities and corners. The decorative front panels remain attractive, with the principal lettering and illustrations clearly visible. The photographs do not establish the condition of the boards, internal pages or bindings, so these should be checked before describing the books as internally clean or tightly bound. This is a complete two-volume set in its original, visibly worn dust jackets, suitable for reading or collecting.…
