Review: Steely Dan Complete is important because the band is important--maybe the last rock band there needed to be, since they covered just about every base in popular music and more--but it's flawed: It would be impossible to get all of Steely Dan's rich harmony into a book this size, and as a result many of the guitar chords are an approximation, lacking the finesse of the original harmonies. Some of the piano lines probably yield more detail, but surely it would haven't been hard to put everything in the right key? "Josie" and "Peg", for example, are a semitone higher than the record. Did the transcriber have his record deck running too fast? This a shame, because it means anyone who'd worked out the recorded versions and then presented this book for a band to play would be out of step. But all the same, any document of Becker and Fagen's exquisite writing is valuable, and this is at least a handy reference, particularly as a quick guide to structure and lyrics. It covers all seven Steely Dan albums--around 60 songs--and is prefaced with illuminating interviews with Becker and Fagen. --Mark Gilbert
