Item description from seller

With additions and notes, by James Renwick. Third American, from the fifth London edition, considerably enlarged. 13 engraved plates, some folding, 67 text illustrations, 324 pages plus 6 pages of advertisements. 8vo, original cloth, paper spine label; light foxing throughout, corners rubbed, inner hinge weak. Philadelphia, 1836. Good. One of many works by the Dublin-born popularizer of diverse scientific knowledge, best known for his editorship of the "Cabinet Cyclopedia". Although "not an original or profound thinker, [Lardner] was a man of great and versatile ability, master of a lucid style, and as a populariser of science did excellent work. He is satirised by Thackeray in the last "Memoirs of Mr. Charles J. Yellowplush" as a literary quack advertising his encyclopedia at dinner parties." -- D.N.B.
