The author's illness is mysterious and deeply puzzling-for a few glorious weeks the doctors even thought that it might not be leukemia at all. Now the original diagnosis has been amended. Alsop's form of leukemia may not be rapidly fatal; he has received a stay of execution. The uncertainty of his future has turned Stewart Alsop's thoughts back to the past.
