Print on Demand. The book explores morality and art, arguing that the highest human quality emerges from directly perceiving reality and responding to its ever-shifting pressures. This creative, multi-faceted, and improvisational response is central to the author's critique of those who pursue any kind of singular path, idea, or principle to the exclusion of others. He asserts that the pursuit of any activity or ideal, whether it be morality, religion, pleasure, or work, should be undertaken for its own sake. Morality in this sense is not the following of some principle, but rather the active, engaged, passionate experience of living. This book is a reproduction of an important historical work, digitally reconstructed using state-of-the-art technology to preserve the original format. In rare cases, an imperfection in the original, such as a blemish or missing page, may be replicated in the book.

What I care for is the inner life. Feelings are everything. Of course, they can lead - many say they must lead - to works of some kind, to expression, or to action. But these works them selves are ultimately of use only on account of the feelings they excite, or at least make possible. What would be the use of feeding a person who had always ugly feelings? Now, a state of mind can be beautiful in itself. It need not lead anywhere; it has got there already.
