Print on Demand. This book is a comprehensive statistical analysis of the territorial organization of France. It was commissioned by Napoleon Bonaparte, who sought to bolster his authority by deploying his power apparatus in the most effective way. Written with impressive detail, this work provides an unparalleled insight into French society and administration of the time. It throws light on the population, nature of the land, and the depth of influence of French authority at the outset of the 19th Century. The authors believed that one could not efficiently govern such a large territory unless its conditions were known in detail. In this sense, the book epitomizes the spirit of the Aufklärung: the belief that detailed knowledge is the foundation for improving governance, and therefore, human life itself. This book is a reproduction of an important historical work, digitally reconstructed using state-of-the-art technology to preserve the original format. In rare cases, an imperfection in the original, such as a blemish or missing page, may be replicated in the book.…

- Methods for calculating population changes tied to territorial expansion.
- Comparisons between former and expanded France, including rough population and area estimates.
