Paperback. Slight foxing to end inside covers and edge. This volume of essays considers ten leading statemen and politcians of the Stuart period: Cranfield, Buckingham, Laud, Strafford, Pym, Vane the Younger, Clarendon, Danby, Shaftesbury and Sunderland. The essays combine biography with analaysis of the major issues of the seventeenth century. Each essay, in tracing the life of its subject, not only illustrates their characters and the conditions of contemporary political life, but also examines the specific administrative, financial or religious problems each was required to solve to achieve political success. The motivation, success or failings and significance of each of these ten statesmen are considered. Thus a series of studies is provided which avoid the limitations of mere potted biography. Notes and bibliographies refer the student to more specialised studies and sources of the period and amplify points made in the text. Illustrated. 270 pp. (We carry a wide selection of titles in The Arts, Theology, History, Politics, Social and Physical Sciences. academic and scholarly books and Modern First Editions ,and all types of Academic Literature.).…
