Hundreds of actors and actresses have made their stage debut in the Coliseum, many of them being instantly recognisable on TV today, including numerous stars of British soap operas such as 'Coronation Street', 'Emmerdale', and 'Brookside'. For example, Barbara Knox (Rita Sullivan), William Roache (Ken Barlow), and Roy Barraclough (Alec Gilroy), of 'Coronation Street'; Paula Tilbrook (Betty Eagleton) and Steve Halliwell (Zak Dingle) of 'Emmerdale', and Meg Johnson of 'Brookside'.
Other famous faces include Britain's favourite, Dame Thora Hird, Kathy Staff (Nora Batty of 'Last of the Summer Wine'), Dora Bryan, Jean Alexander (of 'Coronation Street' and 'Last of the Summer Wine'), and versatile actor and director Alan Rothwell who also found first fame in 'Coronation Street' and later in children's TV show 'Picture Box'.
The 'Coliseum' was a revelation to me - friendly staff, intimate auditorium and a cracking cast. From then on I began to become a regular attender. A year on and I went to see the pantomime Dick Whittington at Nottingham Playhouse starring Kenneth Alan Taylor (one of his many retirement seasons!) and we got talking in the bar after the show. Kenneth had just been appointed Chief Executive at the 'Coliseum' and I told him of my desire to work there. My story then moves on to October 1997 when I saw the post of Marketing and Press Manager advertised in 'The Stage' - I applied and got the job. Jimmie Chinn was staying at my house at the time and so the story sort of comes full circle!
When Peter Riley of 'P & D Riley' asked me to consider writing a book on the 'Coliseum' I immediately agreed - over the past five years or so I have followed so many people by falling under the spell of this little theatre. It has almost a unique history and has launched the careers of so many household names and faces over the years that it surely deserves perhaps a little more respect than it gets these days. It is therefore my privilege to attempt to document what makes the 'rep' so special.
Someone once said that to copy from one book is plagiarism but to copy from lots of books is research - well, I gladly acknowledge the help of so many people with this project - all the 'Coliseum' staff past and present particularly Sue Evans who catalogued the whole archive with me, Jane Doxey, David Rustidge and of course, Kenneth Alan Taylor, the staff of the Oldham Chronicle, all those actors and writers who contributed and gave of their time, Jimmie Chinn, those who took all the fabulous photographs, and Peter Riley for being so encouraging.
I have read just about every programme note written between 1920 and 2000 and it is largely from these that I have chosen to tell the tale - at least here I have found people's own words and after all, this is not really the story of bricks but of people. I hope I have told it like it was! I must also apologise to those who read hoping to see their name in print - I have listed many of the actors who have trodden the boards here over the years however, space has allowed me to list only a cross-section of names that may be familiar to you - over two thousand actors have appeared at the 'Coliseum' over the last sixty years or so and it would have been impossible to list them all.
