Paperback. What if the world is not as solid, immediate, or self-evident as it appears? Here, light is not used as a religious metaphor but as a scientific starting point - the fundamental means through which we observe, measure, and understand the universe. Yet, as modern physics reveals, light also challenges many of our ordinary assumptions about space, time, and reality. From this starting point, the book moves through relativity, quantum theory, time, perception, the brain, and consciousness. As each layer is examined, familiar certainties begin to shift. The apparently solid world becomes less certain, time becomes more mysterious, and the self - the deeply familiar sense of "who I am"- begins to unravel. Alongside modern scientific perspectives, the book draws on insights from Advaita Vedanta, Buddhism, and Zen, bringing contemporary enquiry into conversation with ancient contemplative traditions. Together, these perspectives form a coherent exploration that challenges one of our most deeply held assumptions: that there is a solid, independent "I" at the centre of experience. And what if the 'I' experiencing the world is not what we think it is? Rather than offering another system of belief, this book invites readers to look closely, question directly, and investigate their own experience. In a field where science and contemplation rarely meet as equals, this book attempts something unusual: an enquiry that takes both modern physics and ancient wisdom seriously, letting each illuminate the other without reducing either to the other's terms - and finding, in the space between them, something neither can fully articulate alone. It is a question that, once genuinely asked, quietly touches everything - how we live, what we seek, and what we take ourselves to be. For readers drawn to the intersection of modern physics, consciousness studies, spirituality, and contemplative enquiry-and for anyone who has ever wondered whether the world is quite what it seems - this is an investigation not only into the nature of reality, but into the one who believes they are experiencing it. What if modern physics and ancient spirituality have been approaching the same mystery from opposite directions?
Modern physics has made the universe stranger than it once seemed. Matter is not quite as solid as it appears. Time is not absolute. What we observe depends profoundly on how reality is encountered and measured. In the equations of quantum gravity, time does not appear at all. It emerges only when systems interact, when information is exchanged, when relationship creates the sense of before-and-after.
For thousands of years, spiritual masters such as Buddha, Krishna, Shiva, Ibn Arabi, Rumi, Meister Eckhart, Ramana Maharshi, Adi Shankara and more have questioned something equally fundamental: the apparent solidity of the self. Is there really an independent “I” at the centre of experience - or is the person we take ourselves to be something constructed through thought, memory, perception, and consciousness?
Let Us Start with Light brings these two seemingly distant worlds into one conversation.
The book begins with physics and ends somewhere quieter. It moves through relativity, quantum theory, perception, and consciousness - and alongside, through Advaita Vedanta, Buddhism, and Zen. Not as belief. As enquiry.
This is not a book that offers conclusions. It is a book that loosens what you were certain of - and invites you to look at what remains.
If matter is not quite what it appears to be, if time is stranger than our everyday experience suggests, and if perception itself is constructed - then what about the seemingly unquestionable “me” experiencing all of this?
What if the world is not quite what we think it is?
And what if we are not, either?
For readers drawn to modern physics, consciousness, philosophy, spirituality, and the mystery of human existence, Let Us Start with Light is an invitation to explore not only the nature of reality, but the one who believes they are experiencing it.
