Print on Demand. This literary analysis deconstructs the lives of 1400 soldiers detained in Parish Prison, New Orleans during the American Civil War. Their experiences during their ten-month imprisonment are depicted through the creation of a camp newspaper, ‘The Stars and Stripes,’ as they grapple with the daily struggles, dreams and hardships of their plight. This literary work, penned with no thought of publication, was written to fill the long dreary hours of confinement, providing an outlet of expression not otherwise available. These rich first-hand accounts shed light on the little-known experiences of the American Civil War and the human toll it took on its participants. This book is a reproduction of an important historical work, digitally reconstructed using state-of-the-art technology to preserve the original format. In rare cases, an imperfection in the original, such as a blemish or missing page, may be replicated in the book.

Sufficient excuse for the appearance of this little volume Will be found in the often repeated request, by my fellow - prisoners of war, that the Stars and Stripes might be published for cir culation among our personal friends. The general interest felt by the public at large in all the vicis situdes to which our soldiers are liable, has proved its claim to be considered among the personal friends of the released prisoners of war. To the public, therefore, this book is sent out With a. Kindly greeting from the fourteen hundred soldiers released by the rebels in May last.
