This book presents a comprehensive overview of intricate mechanisms of virulence, antimicrobial resistance, immune evasion, and biofilm formation of Staphylococcus aureus. It provides insights into mechanisms by which S. aureus acquires and sustains drug resistance, including gene mutation, efflux pumps, and horizontal gene transfer. The book examines the latest advancements in pathogen detection, application of artificial intelligence, and systems biology approaches in S. aureus research. In addition, the book examines host immune responses to persistent S. aureus infections, focusing on immune modulation, chronic inflammation, and evasion mechanisms. Further, the chapters review novel therapeutic interventions, including quorum-sensing inhibitors, plant-derived antimicrobials, and innovative vaccine development. By integrating genomic research, computational biology, and emerging drug discovery techniques, this book outlines the next generation of treatment options for S. aureus-related infections.
Key Features:
This book is an important resource for students and researchers of microbiology and pharmaceutical sciences.

Narasaiah Kolliputi is a distinguished Associate Professor at the University of South Florida (USF), Morsani College of Medicine, with interdisciplinary appointments in the Departments of Pathology & Cell Biology, Pharmaceutical Sciences, Internal Medicine, Pediatrics, and Molecular Medicine. He joined USF in 2010 as an Assistant Professor in the Division of Allergy and Immunology and was tenured and promoted to Associate Professor in 2013. Dr. Kolliputi completed his postdoctoral training in Physiology at Oklahoma State University (2004–2006), followed by advanced research in Pulmonary and Critical Care Medicine at Massachusetts General Hospital and Harvard Medical School (2006–2008), where he subsequently served as a Research Scientist (2008–2009) before joining USF. A recognized expert in lung injury, inflammasome biology, oxidative stress, and redox signaling, Dr. Kolliputi has built a translational research program that bridges basic molecular mechanisms with clinical implications in acute lung injury, pulmonary fibrosis, asthma, and inflammatory cell death (PANoptosis). His research has been continuously supported by the NIH, including R01, R21, and R56 awards totaling nearly $2.91 million (2013–2020), an AHA National Scientist Development Grant ($308K), and multiple USF institutional awards (Internal, PEG, G, and GME). In total, his PI-level portfolio exceeds $4.49M, and his cumulative research portfolio, including Co-I and trainee-linked funding, exceeds $5.73M. Dr. Kolliputi’s research productivity is reflected in over 100 peer-reviewed publications, including 27 papers from the past five years in high-impact journals such as Scientific Reports, Frontiers in Pharmacology, FASEB Journal, Aging Cell, and The American Journal of Physiology. His laboratory has been awarded two U.S. patents, and he was elected to the USF Chapter of the National Academy of Inventors (NAI), with a dedicated brick at the Inventors Commons in the USF Research Park. A committed mentor and educator, Dr. Kolliputi has trained over 100 undergraduate, graduate, and medical trainees, many of whom have achieved national recognition through AHA postdoctoral and predoctoral fellowships, GME Research Awards, an AΩA Student Research Fellowship, and USF Health Research Day honors. In recognition of his contributions to science and education, he has received numerous institutional awards, including the USF Outstanding Research Achievement Award (2017), the Internal Medicine Outstanding Research Award (2017), and the Theodore and Venette Askounes-Ashford Distinguished Scholar Award (2018). He also received the Young Investigator Award from the Society for Experimental Biology and Medicine (SEBM). Dr. Kolliputi serves as Chairman of NIH Study Sections and Special Emphasis Panels (NHLBI) and as Associate Editor for Frontiers in Pharmacology, Frontiers in Physiology, and Frontiers in Genetics, while also serving as a reviewer for the NIH, DoD, AHA, and leading scientific journals.Through his innovative research, mentorship, and leadership, Dr. Kolliputi continues to advance USF’s translational mission, expanding the national and international visibility of the Division of Allergy and Immunology.
