Print on Demand. This book is a single-volume, modern Bible Dictionary, intended for easy reference and understanding for both educated laypeople and Bible scholars alike. It is written with the assumption that the reader has no technical Hebrew, Greek, or Aramaic skills, and provides transliterations and etymologies for many words and terms. The book is organized according to an alphabetized list of Biblical terms, cross-referencing throughout, and covering a wide range of subjects, including people, places, languages, theological concepts, and cultural artifacts. The entries are written by leading scholars in their respective fields, with each entry providing both the technical, scholarly information on its subject, as well as placing that information within the context of the Biblical and historical background. Insights from modern scholarship are also included. This book is a reproduction of an important historical work, digitally reconstructed using state-of-the-art technology to preserve the original format. In rare cases, an imperfection in the original, such as a blemish or missing page, may be replicated in the book.…

The construction of a modern single-volume English Bible Dictionary, accurate and abreast of modern scholarship, presents a complicated problem. For the production of such a book there must be an understanding of the material with which it has to deal; there must be an appreciation of the constituency to which it is to minister; and there must be an intelligent consciousness of the critical position to which its purpose commits it.
