Print on Demand. This endearing Edwardian novel of manners follows Ann Middleton, a young woman from a large provincial family, as she navigates the rules of society and the complexities of relationships. On the cusp of the Great War, society still exerts a stifling influence on young women, especially when they are without a large dowry. Ann finds herself expected to catch a suitable husband, but she has her own ideas about love and happiness and is determined to find a union based on shared feelings and interests. The author sets Ann's journey against the backdrop of a changing society, where old world values clash with new ideas. She explores the lives of the landed gentry, the clergy, and the military, providing a rich tapestry of characters and settings. The tensions between tradition and modernity are skillfully woven into the plot, as Ann grapples with the expectations of others and her own desires. Throughout the novel, the author examines the themes of social class, marriage, and the role of women in society. Ann's experiences as she interacts with various characters from different backgrounds offer insights into the complexities of human nature and the challenges faced by those who dare to deviate from the norm. In an era when women were often defined by their relationships to men, Ann's quest for a fulfilling life beyond marriage serves as a timeless reminder of the importance of following one's own path.
