This is a lot of 6 sporting books by Robert Smith Surtees. Circa 1880's (the volumes aren't dated); Bradbury, Agnew & Co.; London. Each book is profusely illustrated with dozens of beautiful full-page color plates and black & white engravings on wood by John Leech, H.K. Browne and W.T. Maud. Surtees was an English editor, novelist and sporting writer. His books are "engaging and vigorous, and abound with sharp social observation, with a keener eye than Dickens for the natural world." The lot contains the following 6 books: * Mr. Sponge's Sporting Tour * Handley Cross - or, Mr. Jorrocks's Hunt * Mr. Romford's Hounds * Ask Mamma - or, The Richest Commoner in England * Hawbuck Grange - or, The Sporting Adventures of Thomas Scott, Esq. * Plain or Ringlets? Condition: Each volume has sun-fading to the spine as well as sporadic foxing to the pages (though heavier on occasion, most notably to the illustrated plates including title pages); no writing found on the text pages. Most of the issues have a name/date ink stamp one or two pages at the front of the book, as well as a name written in pen on a front end paper (one is dated 1899). Here are notable condition issues by volume: ASK MAMMA - heavy foxing to frontispiece and title page. HANDLEY CROSS - the page listing the illustrations is present but detached; cracks at the hinges. HAWBUCK GRANGE - faded lettering on spine; heavy tanning to half title page. PLAIN RINGLETS - crack at front hinge with 2" separation at the top edge; heavy foxing to the frontispiece, title page and tissue paper between them. MR SPONGES - cracks at the hinges; heavy foxing to the frontispiece and title page; the front end paper and frontispiece are present but detached.
