Print on Demand. This book grapples with a long-standing need within the Church of England: the lack of suitable hymns for public worship. The author explores the shortcomings of existing psalm translations and the challenges of creating new hymns that are both theologically sound and poetically compelling. The book delves into the rich history of psalmody, examining the various attempts to translate and adapt the Psalms for congregational singing. It critiques the limitations of both literal translations and entirely original hymns, arguing that a middle course is necessary to achieve a balance between fidelity to the original text and suitability for modern worship. The author proposes a unique approach, advocating for a compressed and interpretive rendering of the Psalms, capturing the essence of their message while adapting their language and imagery to a Christian context. This book is a reproduction of an important historical work, digitally reconstructed using state-of-the-art technology to preserve the original format. The object has been to prepare a set of Hymns or Anthems suited to modern taste and Christian worship; in other words, to enable 'the members of an enlight ened community, amongst whom Life and Immor tality have been brought to light, to sing with the heart and the understanding as well as with the voice. With this aim, it seemed advisable neither to attempt a new and literal version of the whole of the Psalms, nor yet to compose a set of Anthems'entirely original. Each of these plans has its peculiar advantages, and IS also liable to certain objections.
