Influential military treatise by one of Napoleon's marshals used during the American Civil War. Original green blind-stamped cloth with gilt spine title. Lightly rubbed with moderate wear to head and base of spine and corners. Binding firm. Contents clean and very good with occasional light foxing, largely concentrated on pages at front and rear of book. Contents include such topics as lines of operation and strategy, tactics, maneuvers, troop organization, artillery, fortifications, administration, courts martials, offensive and defensive wars, marches and encampments, reconnaissances in force, detachments, battles, retreats, night actions, defending fortified positions, etc. Contemporary signature of Col. R.P. Buckland inside front board. Colonel Ralph Pomeroy Buckland served in the American Civil War, commanding the 72nd Ohio Volunteer Infantry with distinction at the Battle of Shiloh. Promoted to the rank of brigadier general, Buckland was placed in command of the District of Memphis, and after the war, served in Congress.
