Paperback. Special Needs - Volume 1 is not simply a story, but a psychologically sharp and unfiltered exploration of behaviour, identity, and the decisions people rarely admit, even to themselves.Set within the fluorescent corridors of Accident & Emergency and psychiatric wards, the novel follows Dr. Fabian Best as he listens to a patient whose story refuses to remain contained within diagnosis, protocol, or expectation. What begins as another clinical encounter gradually unfolds into something far more complex, where the boundaries between illness and intention, care and control, begin to blur. At the centre of this narrative is Micky, a character whose life moves between addiction, homelessness, institutional systems, and survival strategies that are as deliberate as they are necessary. As his story emerges, the reader is drawn into a world where psychiatric language can function as both shield and weapon, where systems designed to help are quietly navigated, learned, and at times exploited, and where the difference between vulnerability and performance becomes increasingly difficult to define. This is not a novel that relies on plot alone. What makes it compelling is not only what happens, but why it happens.Beneath the surface, it examines the quiet negotiations people make with themselves, the justifications they construct in order to continue, and the subtle shifts in identity that occur when behaviour begins to change. It explores how risk, desire, denial, and dependency are not isolated phenomena, but interconnected forces that shape decisions over time. Uncompromising and at times darkly comic, Special Needs does not offer reassurance or moral clarity. It does not present heroes or villains, and it does not guide the reader toward a comfortable conclusion. Instead, it places you inside situations where motives are uncertain, decisions feel rational in the moment, and consequences unfold in ways that are difficult to reverse. It is a study of systems, and more importantly, of what people do within them. This is not a light read. It is a novel for readers who are drawn to psychologically driven storytelling, who are interested in the realities of addiction, the complexity of human behaviour, and the uncomfortable spaces where control, identity, and survival intersect. It is for those who prefer questions over answers, and insight over reassurance.Written with clinical precision and literary restraint, Special Needs - Volume 1 sits at the intersection of psychological realism and literary fiction. It is unsettling without exaggeration, emotionally charged without sentimentality, and grounded in observations that feel both specific and universal. This is the first volume in a continuing series. It establishes the psychological and institutional foundations of a story that does not resolve easily, and does not intend to. By the time you reach the end, you may find yourself looking more closely at the people around you, and questioning how well any of us are truly understood. Special Needs: Volume 1 is a dark, psychologically sharp novel set at the margins of psychiatry. Through drugs, trauma, power and survival, it follows a man who learns how the system really worksand how to use it. Unsettling, darkly comic, and uncompromising. This item is printed on demand.
