About this Item
Large beautifully hand colored lithograph of four humming birds, highlighted with gum arabic and with gold on the birds' heads and throats. From "A Monograph of the Trochilidae, or Family of Humming-Birds" published London, 1849-1861. This South American species of hummingbird is found chiefly in the mountains of Bolivia, Colombia, Ecuador, Peru and Venezuela; it is identified by its long tail with "raquets" at the tips and the dense feathering around the legs called "leg puffs". John Gould, the author of the masterwork on Australian birds "The Birds of Australia", is considered the father of Australian ornithology. Seller Inventory # 19590
