The South Lake Diary is a coming-of-age literary work set against the backdrop of campus life in southern China during the 1980s. Employing a diary-style structure, the author unfolds the inner monologue of Pu Shao'ao, a young university instructor, through a first-person narrative. The work authentically captures the psychological struggles and self-redemption of young people of that era, grappling with post-graduation assignments, urban-rural disparities, and the conflict between ideals and reality.
The greatest literary value of this book lies in its interweaving of personal emotions-love, loneliness, and confusion-with the contextual realities of the time, such as the education system and personnel arrangements. Through a candid and honest narrative, it portrays the state of youth during a "period of spiritual rupture." The protagonist's discontent with life, his reflections on fate, and his emotional attachment to a student named Yingzi are not merely a "teacher-student romance" but rather a pursuit of purity and idealistic emotion amid his isolated circumstances.
As the author states, "He is a Chinese version of 'Young Werther,' whose youthful troubles may allow today's young readers to see their own reflections." These "troubles" stem from both the tensions of reality and an inherent idealism and sense of personal dignity.
This book chooses a literary approach to reveal the emotional world of the "superfluous man" of an era. It is an attempt at "private literature" and a spiritual archive belonging to the intellectuals of the 1980s.
