- Does diagnostic ultrasound physics feel overwhelming the moment you start dealing with acoustic impedance, attenuation, Doppler equations, artifacts, safety indices, and transducer design all at once?
- Have you ever wondered how sound waves, piezoelectric elements, signal processing, Doppler principles, image optimization, quality assurance, and patient safety all come together into one coherent system that produces a diagnostic-quality ultrasound examination?
- Are you looking for a clear, authoritative, and professionally written guide that teaches sonography physics and instrumentation the way it is actually understood, applied, and mastered by the best practitioners in clinical practice, examination rooms, and real diagnostic imaging departments?
This book is your complete, in-depth guide to understanding, applying, and mastering the physics and instrumentation of diagnostic medical ultrasound from first principles to advanced clinical practice.
Inside This Handbook, You Will Learn How to:
- Understand the physics of how sound actually travels through tissue — pressure waves, propagation speed, acoustic impedance, reflection, refraction, scattering, and attenuation — explained in clear, precise language that connects directly to what you see on the screen
- Follow sound from the piezoelectric element through backing layers, matching layers, lenses, and array architecture to understand exactly how a transducer generates and detects the beam that forms every image
- Trace the complete signal path from transmitted pulse to displayed pixel — beamforming, TGC, signal detection, scan conversion, gray-scale mapping, harmonic imaging, and spatial compounding — so image optimization is never guesswork
- Recognize, explain, and manage every major artifact category — reverberation, comet-tail, ring-down, mirror image, shadowing, enhancement, edge shadow, aliasing, flash, side lobes, grating lobes, and beam-width artifacts — and turn physics errors into diagnostic clues
- Implement ALARA in daily practice, read Thermal Index and Mechanical Index displays with genuine understanding, and protect vulnerable populations including first-trimester embryos and neonates with evidence-based safety protocols
- Understand point-of-care ultrasound as a complete system — handheld device physics, FAST and RUSH protocols, AI-guided acquisition, cloud connectivity, telemedicine integration, competency standards, and medicolegal frameworks
- Engage confidently with artificial intelligence in sonography — how CNNs learn, what AI can and cannot do, FDA regulatory pathways, ethical considerations, and how to use AI tools without surrendering the clinical judgment they cannot replace
- Understand the emerging technologies reshaping the field — 3D and 4D ultrasound, photoacoustic fusion, ultrafast plane wave compounding, super-resolution localization microscopy, wearable ultrasound patches, virtual beamforming, IVUS, and endoscopic ultrasound — with the physics foundation to evaluate each as it enters clinical practice
More Than a Textbook — A Career-Long Clinical Reference
Sonography Principles and Instruments Handbook is not a collection of definitions to memorize before an examination and forget afterward. It is a working reference built on the conviction that physics mastery is the foundation of diagnostic excellence — the resource that lets you reason about any new situation, any new technology, and any unexpected clinical finding from first principles rather than pattern recognition alone.
If you are ready to understand diagnostic ultrasound physics with clarity, depth, and genuine clinical purpose, this is your essential guide.

To exercise the right of withdrawal, electronically fill in and submit a clear statement on our website, under "My Purchases" in "My Account". We will communicate to you an acknowledgement of receipt of such a withdrawal on a durable medium (e.g. by e-mail) without delay.
To meet the withdrawal deadline, it is sufficient for you to send your communication concerning your exercise of the right of withdrawal before the withdrawal period has expired.
Effects of withdrawal
If you withdraw from this contract, we will reimburse to you all payments received from you, including the costs of delivery (except for the supplementary costs arising if you chose a type of delivery other than the least expensive type of standard delivery offered by us).
We may make a deduction from the reimbursement for loss in value of any goods supplied, if the loss is the result of unnecessary handling by you.
We will make the reimbursement without undue delay, and not later than 14 days after the day on which we are informed about your decision to withdraw from this contract.
We will make the reimbursement using the same means of payment as you used for the initial transaction, unless you have expressly agreed otherwise; in any event, you will not incur any fees as a result of such reimbursement.
We may withhold reimbursement until we have received the goods back, or you have supplied evidence of having sent back the goods, whichever is the earliest.
You shall send back the goods or hand them over to California Books, Fort Wayne, Indiana, U.S.A., without undue delay and in any event not later than 14 days from the day on which you communicate your withdrawal from this contract to us. The deadline is met if you send back the goods before the period of 14 days has expired. You will have to bear the direct cost of returning the goods.
