Why can a song you barely noticed suddenly begin playing in your mind and why can the same few seconds refuse to leave?
The Song That Refuses to Leave explores the fascinating science of earworms, or what researchers call involuntary musical imagery. Drawing on research from psychology, music cognition, neuroscience and memory studies, Sky Adler investigates how melodies become memorable, why repetition matters, how rhythm and expectation help music persist, and why one person's irresistible earworm may leave another completely untouched.
From childhood songs and television themes to advertising jingles, sporting chants, favourite records and viral music, the book reveals how repeated sound becomes woven into memory. It explores why music can transport us back to adolescence, how songs become attached to people and places, why earworms often appear during quiet or routine moments, and why an internal tune can be comforting one day and maddening the next.
Accessible, lively and grounded in evidence, this is a journey into the musical mind and into the curious fact that silence does not always mean the music has stopped.
