About this Item
2nd printing (November 1918) of the 1st edition (October 1918). Subtitled 'Trench Etched'. Rare. Legionnnaire Bowe was John Bowe, an American citizen - this is his account and history of the Foreign Legion. 281 pages printed and bound on blue-purple, now faded cloth boards with gold, gilt titles to the front boards. Faded gilt titles to the spine. Contents are divided across 21 chapters and include headings such as 'History of the Legion', 'Americans in the Legion', 'Trenches', 'Life in Death', 'The 170th French Regiment', 'Democracy', 'Autocracy'. Additional pages titled 'Some Comments'. Black and white photographs. Additional condition notes are as follows: crease evident to bottom right of front boards; age-related wear and tear, rubs, bumps, etc., to boards; some loosening to spine binding at front and rear but the binding is intact; former owner's name in pen to left f.e.p; evidence of a former sticker mark to top right of f.e.p; gift inscription in pen from 'Auntie Bowe' to 'Nephew Leon' dated 1921, USA [cannot read the place-name]; light fox-marks to same and to title pages. Notwithstanding these condition remarks, this is a tidy copy of a fascinating account, judged to be in overall 'Good' condition. No dust-jacket. 8vo.
