Death of a Soldier: Heifu the Qin Soldier's Final Letter Home is a historical novel set in the final years of the Warring States period, when the state of Qin conquered the other six states. The story revolves around an ordinary Qin family from Anlu, Yunmeng, focusing on the struggles of the elder brother Zhong and his two younger brothers, Heifu and Jing, as they fight to survive under the harsh Qin laws and the relentless wars of conscription.

Ying, the youngest daughter of the family, was originally an orphan. She was found in the mountains by Jing and brought home, forming an unbreakable bond with the family. Unable to fight on the battlefield due to a leg disability, Zhong relies on a recommendation from Yingji Ji, a retainer, to seek a career in the Qin capital, Xianyang. Heifu, bold and courageous, is determined to change the family's fate through military merit. Jing, gentle and home-loving, has just married his childhood sweetheart Xiao when he is conscripted into the army.

The novel follows the conscription of Heifu and Jing as they join campaigns against Wei and Chu, offering a detailed depiction of the Qin military's merit-based rank system, its stringent laws, the realities of the battlefield, and the bonds of longing and watchfulness between soldiers and their families amidst the flames of war. Two authentic letters unearthed from the Shuihudi site in Yunmeng run throughout the book, serving as the final link between the brothers and their family. As the campaign against Chu reaches its tragic end, both Heifu and Jing fall on the battlefield, leaving behind Xiao's unborn child, Jue, and Ying's figure as she journeys far away to Xianyang in search of her own path in life.
