Synopsis:

Low fertility rates are usually associated with high levels of economic development. The Indian state of Kerala is an exception -- despite a comparatively low level of economic development, the fertility rate is declining rapidly. This book studies the determinants of declining fertility rates.

The authors have developed a model -- applicable to other regions in the developing world -- which focuses on social development and cultural change as causes of declining fertility and, more importantly, an improvement in the quality of life.

Review: `In a noteworthy departure from other works on fertitliy, Mahadevan and Sumangala have succeeded in demonstrating the intricate and multi-dimensional nature of this phenomenon and the potential for a sociological explanation of demographic events.' - Contributions to Indian Sociology

`For the first time in-depth family level case studies on determinants of fertility were successfully documented.... The most improtant contribution of this book is the development of a new comprehensive and appropriate conceptual model to explain the determinants of fertility behaviour and also its decline in the context of a developing country. It suitably depicts the role of new varialbes identified in the present study in addition to projecting the appropriate improtance ofwell established determinates of fertility behaviour. Thus, it is a valuable contribution to the body of population sciences particulaly for new methodology, theroy and policy.' - Asian Forum for Development and Population Studies
