The Smoking Nun is a timely story of passion, love, conflict and betrayal. Set in the era of the Civil Rights Movement and Vietnam War, this memoir recounts one complex woman’s love of God, suffering humanity, and a man. A story within a story, Temkin unveils a secret she held for years and never thought she would tell, but does so within a larger story of meaningfulness, hope, and an unending trust in the adventure of life. She asks the reader this question: Would you consider her secret a # Me Too story? Temkin no longer smokes cigarettes and is no longer a nun, but she maintains all of her belief in the holiness of the human heart, her daring spirit, and her quest for connectedness with God and the wide diversity of human persons.
About the Author: Ann J. Temkin is half Jewish, half Gentile, a former Catholic nun and an ordained Protestant minister. Born into a family of many traditions, she was raised in none. Her long spiritual journey , which began in early childhood, has been marked by included wrestling with hard questions, dissatisfaction with easy answers, and a deep yearning for the living God. Her passion for social justice and concern for the marginalized, the invisible, the oppressed led her to involvement with the civil rights movement and to careers as a psychotherapist and minister. Ann’s first book, Sight In the Sandstorm: Jesus in His World and Mine, tells Gospel stories with the context of the political, socio-economic and religious environment of Palestine in the 1st century, and weaves these together with adventures from Ann’s own life. The Smoking Nun is the story of the Catholic part of Ann’s journey. It includes a timely story which she did not think she would ever tell. It is a hopeful story of painful conflicts and the woman who finds meaning and beauty in them all. Ann has academic credentials, an MA in Theology and an MSW. She is a complex person with a depth of understanding, but her books speak most strongly from her heart.
