Print on Demand. This book, originally published in 1876, argues that while tobacco in its various forms can be harmful when used excessively or by the young, it can be a valuable comfort to many, particularly individuals who suffer from nerves and anxiety. The author, a medical doctor, draws on personal observation and experience to support his claims, alongside testimony from leading physicians, philosophers, and more. While acknowledging the dangers of smoking and chewing, the author highlights that such practices can be beneficial to some, especially those who are older and suffer from ennui or hardship. The book explores the effects of tobacco on the body and mind, detailing its various components and how they interact with the human system. Readers will find insights into the chemistry of tobacco, the history of its global use, and the social and cultural significance of this controversial plant. With its fascinating blend of historical, medical, and personal anecdotes, this book offers a unique perspective on the contentious issue of tobacco use. This book is a reproduction of an important historical work, digitally reconstructed using state-of-the-art technology to preserve the original format. In rare cases, an imperfection in the original, such as a blemish or missing page, may be replicated in the book.…

Man exists by bread he lives with tobacco. Bread is the staff; tobacco the charm of life - bread represents necessity; tobacco, enjoyment. The one, toil; the other, relaxation: the former, the straight line the latter, the curve of beauty - the wave of grace - the ellipse - the circle.
In the fifteenth century, Europe became acquainted with the art of printing, and with tobacco. During the years which have since enlightened the darkness of prior ages, literature and tobacco have pre served so close an affinity, that they may not now be sundered. Raleigh, Milton, Dryden, Newton, Prior, Steel, Addison, Swift, Congreve, Bolingbroke, Pope, Johnson, Byron, Burns, Scott, Campbell, Moore, Thackeray, and Dickens, spoke, wrote, or sung, under inspiration from the weed of strange power. Tobacco plays, however, a higher role than that of prompting merely. It seems to have been specially entrusted to the use of man, for the pur pose of long preserving our most giant minds, by virtue of its power to lull them into an occasional and calm repose. But for tobacco, their geninwould often be that only of the meteor's flash; 3. Too incessant mental strain, without relief, being apt to hurl reason from its throne, and shroud it in a night of chaos.
