By late nineteenth century Smethwick, once described as 'an insignificant hamlet', had become an important manufacturing centre wedged strategically between Birmingham and the Black Country, having strong links with both but not tru4y belonging to either. The diversity of its output was- striking: products ranged from nuts and bolts to lighthouse lanterns. Most of the materials used in the construction of that great showpiece of Victorian engineering, the Crystal Palace, were fabricated in Smethwick's workshops. As well as portraying the industrial development of Smethwick and the network of communications which brought about its expansion, this book depicts events in the corporate life of the town and the activities of the people who lived and worked there. The changing aspect of the area is well illustrated and many streets' buildings and rural areas which have disappeared or altered beyond recognition are included. - John Maddison's pictorial record of one of the most densely populated industrial towns in Britain will evoke memories for many Smethwickians, as well as providing a fascinating insight into town life for the local historian.
