Build a technology plan that fits the life you want to keep living.
A helpful device can solve one problem and add another: an account someone else controls, a subscription you forgot, or a routine that fails when the internet goes down. How do you decide what belongs in your home and keep it manageable?
Your Smart Independence Plan helps older adults and the families who support them turn separate technology decisions into a practical plan for aging in place. Start with your own goals, take stock of what you already have, and choose changes you can use and maintain.
Inside, you will learn how to:
- Set priorities before shopping: identify everyday difficulties, choose what needs attention now, and give later purchases a clear reason to wait.
- Choose a manageable set of devices: connect each addition to a real need, check dependencies, and keep useful manual controls.
- Budget for ownership: account for subscriptions, replacements, complexity, and the time someone will spend helping.
- Keep control of access: agree on account ownership, privacy boundaries, family permissions, and support roles before problems arise.
- Prepare for interruptions: map power, internet, charging, and account-recovery needs, with practical backups for important functions.
- Put the plan into everyday use: introduce one project at a time, work through a 30-day implementation sequence, and review what to keep, simplify, change, or remove.
Use 12 worksheets and planning tools to record your decisions. The Total Cost & Complexity Budget, Support Roles Agreement, One-Year Smart Independence Plan, and other tools help turn good intentions into responsibilities, review dates, and next steps.
Bring the pieces together in a one-year plan with up to three meaningful outcomes. A quarterly review helps you adjust when your needs, household, devices, or support arrangements change.
Use this guide on its own or to bring the Smart Independence at Home series into one personal plan. You do not need every device or every earlier volume.
Make your next technology decision with a clear purpose, a workable budget, and a plan for what happens afterward.
