Publication: Hempstead, The Mill Press, 1934 Formatting: 8vo, pp. 398. Condition Report: Very Good. The volume remains exceptionally structurally sound, with the original blue cloth boards showing virtually no shelf-wear and the gilt spine tooling remaining bright and entirely unoxidised. The binding is remarkably tight, displaying excellent preservation for a text of this era. Internally, the condition is marred only by noticeable foxing to the preliminary leaves, including the half-title, title, and printer's pages, though the main text block remains largely clean and tidy. The accompanying dust jacket, now protected in a clear sleeve, is fully intact, presenting with some expected age-toning and very minor spotting, but completely avoiding the chips, creases, or major tears that typically plague 1930s paper wrappers. Catalogue Note: This is the 'Second and Cheaper Edition' of Harry Barnes's critical examination of British housing policy and urban squalor, originally issued in 1931. Barnes, a Fellow of the Royal Institute of British Architects and former Member of Parliament for Newcastle East, leveraged his extensive architectural and political experience to confront the escalating crisis of interwar slum conditions. This particular copy boasts a highly desirable provenance, featuring a personal inscription from the author in ink to the front free endpaper, reading: "For Edna Mee / from the Author / with friendship / 12. 6. 34." Signed and inscribed copies of Barnes's work are notably scarce on the open market, and they are exceedingly uncommon when accompanied by a well-preserved original dust jacket. Written against the backdrop of Britain's severe interwar housing crisis, The Slum: Its Story and Solution is a passionate and practical treatise by Harry Barnes, a leading architect and politician of the era. Drawing from both his tenure as Chairman of the Architects' Registration Council and his frontline political experience in Parliament, Barnes meticulously traces the historical origins of urban decay while proposing robust, actionable solutions for national redevelopment. A seminal text in the history of British urban planning, it provides a fascinating contemporary window into the social and architectural challenges that shaped the modern metropolis. …
