About the Author: Leonard L. Richards is professor emeritus of history at the University of Massachusetts at Amherst. He received the American Historical Association's Beveridge Prize for ""Gentlemen of Property and Standing"": Anti-Abolition Mobs in Jacksonian America. He is also the author of The Advent of American Democracy and The Life and Times of Congressman John Quincy Adams, a finalist for the Pulitzer Prize.
