National Cowgirl Museum Hall of Fame inductee Rhonda Coy Sedgwick's biography of legendary barnstorming pilot and South Dakota's "Mr. Aviation," Clyde W. Ice. Ice's career spanned nearly 70 years. He taught himself to fly in 1919 after acquiring a damaged surplus WWI-era biplane, a "Jenny," and repairing it, then spent most of the 1920's barnstorming, performing stunts at shows and reportedly carrying over 50,000 passengers during his career, as many as 750 people in a single day. He founded South Dakota's first airline, Rapid Air Lines, in 1927, initially profiting from barnstorming with a Ford Tri-Motor and pioneering several aerial techniques, including building and using the first ski-equipped plane in South Dakota and developing his own invention for the first local aerial crop dusting in 1937. Charles Lindbergh, a friend and contemporary who also barnstormed, grew apace. Later, Ice flew supplies and medicine to snowbound people and transported sick or injured individuals to medical facilities during harsh winters. He also conducted unusually productive aerial coyote hunting as a form of predator control for sheep farmers. Includes detailed text and dozens of historical photos, many never before published. Signed and inscribed by author Sedgwick on title page thus: "May all your sky trails be safe and all your landings happy! Rhonda Sedgwick Stearns. Matthew 6:33." Scarce in commerce. 165 pp. 8 3/4" x 5 3/4". Tight, unmarked copy with light shelf wear. A very presentable copy of an early aviation collectible. Photographs of or additional information about this item are available on request. All inquiries answered promptly.…
