Is this a big problem or a small problem? Help young children learn to pause, think, and decide what to do next.
This size of the problem book uses realistic photographs and simple language to help children understand the difference between everyday frustrations and situations that need a grown-up’s help.
The story explains that small problems can sometimes feel big. It introduces stopping, taking a slow breath, and thinking about whether a problem can be solved independently or needs adult support.
Children then practice with 14 illustrated situations, including a broken pencil, losing a game, a wet shirt, a friend’s nosebleed, and a fire in the kitchen. Each practice page includes thumbs-up and thumbs-down visuals so children can respond by pointing or using a gesture.
Inside this social story picture book:
-
A simple introduction to big and small problems
-
Realistic photographs that support understanding
-
A pause-and-breathe strategy for approaching problems
-
14 everyday and safety scenarios for guided practice
-
A visual discussion page to connect the story to children’s own experiences
-
Guidance for adults on introducing and using the story, including supporting children who communicate without speech
For parents and educators looking for problem solving books for kids, this book provides opportunities to discuss what happened, consider possible responses, and practice asking for help.
Use it to teach social skills for preschoolers, support kindergarten social skills lessons, or supplement instruction in special education and autism homeschooling. Its simple text and visual response choices also make it a useful resource for adults teaching social skills for autism.
Whether you are building a collection of social stories for autism or looking for a kindergarten social skills book, Size of the Problem offers a concrete way to explore everyday challenges together.
