Item description from seller

191 p. Dustjacket slightly discolored, otherwise very good. - VOGUE'S EYE VIEW -- 'Documented, imitated, derided, psychoanalysed, and frequently con-demned in its own time, the Sixties promises to be the most confusing and misunderstood decade of the twentieth century.' The years have borne out this prediction (from Goodbye Baby and Amen by David Bailey and Peter Evans, published in 1969), as well as revealing an enduring fascination and affection for the period, both among those who were there and those for whom it is simply history. After the turmoil of the Fifties, the Sixties seemed to herald a brave new world of material affluence. London was suddenly the 'swinging' capital of the world, peopled with a 'new aristocracy' of pop singers, photographers, models, and hairdressers whose credentials were that they were talented, classless and young. The Beatles and The Rolling Stones gave pop music a new, raunchy identity and Bob Dylan gave it political awareness. Films such as Saturday Night and Sunday Morning introduced cinema- goers to British working-class life, while Bonnie and Clyde reworked the American myth on screen. The establishment in England was shaken, first by the Profumo scandal, and then by a wave of well-aimed television satire. America had its own youthful icons: Jack Kennedy, whose all-too-brief Presidency was internationally mourned; his glamorous consort Jacqueline; style doyen Tom Wolfe. It also had flower power, Woodstock, the space race, and Viet Nam. Pot, free love, and long hair were the totems of young people everywhere. -- The Sixties lets the decade speak for itself, presenting a year-by-year view of the times as they took form in the pages of the international editions of Vogue, perhaps the greatest iconmaker of all. Stars, celebrities, and famous figures of all walks of life appear, many in surprisingly early photographs, identified by their original captions. I rogue, with its own particular genius, discovered and nurtured the most famous model girls of the decade - surely some of its most important faces - and several of these appear in the years in which they came to prominence. Also giving a sense of freshness and immediacy is the 'People are talking about' column, Vogue's racy, funny round-up of what was newest in the worlds of the arts, entertainment, politics, and lifestyle, which is used here to open each yearly section. The articles in this collection similarly reflect the mood and preoccupations of the age. Some have had to be abbreviated but nonetheless retain the contemporary voice as well as the look of the period - which in the words of actress Samantha Eggar was 'merely the road show version of the Jazz Age'.
