From the Author's note: The present Peruvian territory, located on the coast of the Pacific Ocean and in the middle of the South American Andes, was one of the original centers of civilization in the world. The diverse townships and cultures that ended with the well-known Inca Empire have bequeathed humanity cultivated pants and domesticated animals, as well as a political organization and management of the ecosystem. The inheritance of these communities was molded in the remains of their irrigation systems, populated centers, religious sanctuaries, fortifications and streets, as well as their splendid ceramic, metallurgy and gold working that amaze the world today. In 1987, a small group of Peruvian archaeologists, including myself, assumed the responsibility of salvaging the funeral platform of the Mochica Society of Sipán from wreckage and destruction. This is the tragic destiny that threatens and permanently affects the vast and extraordinary cultural inheritance of Peru. Our initial involvement, in difficult circumstances and with limited resources provided by corporations and institutions that felt love for their national culture, allowed us to recover, after exhausting work, there "Lord of Sipán's Tomb". This was the first intact funeral context of an ancient Peruvian leader to be revealed to the present world, showing its splendor. It provided an invaluable piece of information to become acquainted with the Moche or Mochicas, one of the most important pre-Inca cultures, and it also allowed us the reconstruction of the technological development level, the socio-political organization, and the religious beliefs of this civilization. Our investigation, at first, meant to be an archaeological salvage but immediately took responsibility for the preservation, restoration and distribution of the archaeological material and the recovered information. In the same way, it also took responsibility for obtaining resources to keep up the site of investigation. These were obligations that progressively made themselves evident in a long-term continuing project, sponsored by Peruvian and international institutions. After the impressive recovery of the Lord of Sipán's Tomb, and during its restoration and preservation work in Germany, our team discovered the tombs of the "Priest" and of the "Old Lord of Sipán". These national treasures and their significance were later presented in an extraordinary exposition in major North American Museums.Currently, we possess a restoration laboratory in Lambayeque. For more than a decade, the archaeological explorations have retrieved and registered important data on the architecture of the Sanctuary and a dozen funeral contexts of different periods and hierarchies. These show the cultural changes and the complex organization of the elite Mochica, a pre-Inca culture that today, thanks to other brave explorations has gained recognition amongst the most important cultures of the ancient world. This brief synopsis describes the archaeological discoveries and it presents the artistic creations that form part of the patrimony of humankind. Condition: This book is in good condition.
