Looks at the history and culture of the Sioux Indians, who call themselves the Dakota, through their artifacts, beliefs, customs, crafts, and a representative folktale
Synopsis: Part of a series which looks at different civilizations throughout history, this is a book on the Sioux. It provides facts about their origins in North America where they followed the buffalo herds and their encounter with Europeans in the 19th century. Buffaloes were their main source of food, clothing and housing and horses which were introduced by the Spanish in the 17th century were their only form of transport. The book describes the various tribes, their feuds, weapons and their hand signals which they used to communicate with tribes that spoke a different language. An introduction to the Indian Wars is given and names of heroes that are remembered today are listed such as Sitting Bull and Red Cloud. The tribal structure is explained and an insight is given into their philosophies, religious beliefs, tepee construction, food, clothes, decoration and craft. Finally it tells of the coming of the White Man and the destruction of their traditional lifestyle. There is also a tale which tries to explain why buffalo run from Sioux hunters and a explanation of how we know so much about the Sioux even though their lifestyle disappeared so long ago.
