In 1862 a Confederate team torpedoed the Union's showpiece gunboat, the USS Cairo. It sank into the Yazoo River in minutes and rested there for 102 years, until it was salvaged in 1964 to become a premier exhibit at the Vicksburg National Military Park. This is the story of the USS Cairo. Using family oral history and newly examined documents found in the US National Archives, this text aims to disprove some previous theories and to correct factual errors found in earlier reports, including details of the weapon, identification of the torpedo crew, and illustrations of the five gunboats that engaged in the Yazoo battles.

From the Author
This book was written to fill a void in information concerning Confederate special warfare operations and specifically the circumstances surrounding the sinking of the USS Cairo in December 1862 by Confederate naval special operations personnel. Until this book, none of the information had been published or made public. In fact, a great deal of misinformation was being put out by the US Government and others concerning the circumstances surrounding this event. There is so little know about Confederate special operations due to the destruction of records, the lack of records and the pursuit after the war of Confederate intelligence personnel by the US government for war crimes. This book tells the story of one Confederate intelligence operative's life based on newly discovered documents and family oral history. I hope you enjoy it. It is thoroughly annotated and copies of all relevant documents are included in an appendix.
