Reprint Society edition from 1954. Minor creasing to the edges of dustwrapper, minor shelf-wear to bottom edge of dark red boards, otherwise a good clean tight copy of this hard-cover novel. The story, set in a small Mexican town, deals with the conflict between the local priest and the bandit who controls the town. The 1961 film of the same name starring John Mills and Dirk Bogarde was based on the book. 351pp. Size: 12mo - over 6¾" - 7¾" tall. Seller Inventory # 010969

Paperback. Condition: Used. In the whimsical world of 1969, where bell bottoms were the height of fashion and the air was thick with the scent of rebellion, Audrey Erskine Lindop took a bold leap into the literary fray with her audaciously titled novel, "The Singer Not The Song." You might wonder if this is a treatise on the merits of good ol? karaoke or perhaps a philosophical exploration into whether one can truly appreciate a tune without knowing the backstory of the vocalist?fear not, dear reader, for the answer remains tantalisingly elusive. As you thumb through this vintage tome, you might find a curious mélange of characters whose existential crises are perfectly underscored by the psychedelic swirl of the 60s. One can almost hear the faint echo of flower children debating the finer points of art over a cup of herbal tea, while the rest of the world continues to spin on its chaotic axis. Lindop, no stranger to the art of irony, crafts dialogues that leave you questioning whether her characters are philosophising or simply lost in the haze of too many late-night conversations. With a publisher like Fontana Books, famed for their eclectic offerings that married the eccentric with the avant-garde, readers may expect a narrative that dances around the edges of surrealism, or at the very least, a plot that defies conventional wisdom. But let?s not get ahead of ourselves?this is a book that savours the journey rather than rushes to arrive at a destination. Every page is a gentle meander through the intricacies of human emotion, with perhaps a few detours into the absurd. What can one expect from the book, you may ask? Here?s a little list to whet your appetite: Conversations that linger longer than a soggy biscuit in tea. Characters whose motivations are as clear as mud, yet as compelling as your grandmother?s unshakeable beliefs. Moments of clarity that arrive only after you?ve read them thrice and still question their meaning. Irony so thick you could slice it with a particularly dull butter knife. Ponderings that leave you wondering if life is just one big open mic night. Condition: Used, of course, because what?s the fun in a pristine copy? This particular volume has been lovingly thumbed through, possibly during late-night debates over the merits of proper tea versus herbal infusions. Expect a few dog-eared pages, some charming yellowing, and a faint whiff of nostalgia that might just take you back to that unremarkable festival where you lost track of time (and your sense of self). Each crease in the spine tells a story of its own?a testament to the many hands that have grappled with its philosophical fuzziness. In a literary landscape cluttered with formulaic plots and contrived characters, "The Singer Not The Song" stands as a peculiar beacon of puzzlement. It invites you to ponder life?s great questions, or perhaps just to wonder why you decided to pick up a book with such a curious title in the first place. So, grab a cuppa, plump yourself down in your comfiest armchair, and prepare for a reading experience that may or may not be as satisfying as a good old-fashioned sing-along. Just remember, it?s the journey that counts?after all, who really remembers the lyrics anyway? This second-hand treasure is proudly offered by Crappy Old Books, where we believe that every worn-out cover holds a story worth telling, even if it?s just about how it got that peculiar coffee stain on page 47. Happy reading! Seller Inventory # 1598
